Source

The yearly release list in based on release dates of all the major WordPress versions. it basically sums up the total number of releases per year.

History

For the first couple of years WordPress had no official release schedule. With the release of WordPress 2.1 in January 2007, it was decided to adopt a regular release schedule every 3-4 months (90-120 days).

Insights

2006 was the only year that had no major WordPress version releases because WordPress 2.0 was released at the end on December 2005 and WordPress 2.1 was released at the beginning of January 2007.

After the release of WordPress 2.1, it was decided to adopt a regular release schedule every 3-4 months. The chart shows us, more or less, that the in most years the release scheduled was a success. The only exception was the year 2010 in witch we have seen the release of the famous WordPress 3.0 It took a while to build it (it was a huge release with tons of changes), and after that it took a while to build the next version.

I'm an entrepreneur, a web developer and a blogger. I’ve contributed code to each and every WordPress release since version 2.8. I am the Hebrew GTE since WordPress 3.3, responsible for the translation and the release of WordPress Hebrew version. And a core developer for WordPress 4.4, 4.6, 4.7 and 5.2. I am also the founder of GenerateWP.com and several other WordPress related projects. But mainly I work with Israeli startups, providing WordPress Plugin development services.
